Infection of susceptible/tolerant barley genotypes with Barley yellow dwarf virus alters the host plant preference of Rhopalosiphum padi clones depending upon their ability to transmit BYDV

چکیده

Abstract Discovering mechanisms of plant–virus–vector interactions is fundamental to understand their ecology and evolution apply this knowledge in plant protection. To study the influence varying Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) transmission efficiencies on host preference Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) clones, we performed choice experiments with two barley cultivars (BYDV susceptible cv. ‘Rubina’ BYDV tolerant ‘Vixen’) including healthy virus-infected plants. For cultivar ‘Rubina’, aphid clone R07 (high efficiency) preferred BYDV-infected over plants after 24 h, while clones D10 (medium R09 (low neither host. In contrast, infection ‘Vixen’ did not affect plant’s appeal for R07. Host access, indicated by ingestion observed electrical penetration graph technique a period 2 was facilitated D10, whereas an opposite effect R09. R09, difference visible 5 h. As earlier wheat, enhanced emission volatile organic compounds associated virus-induced attraction detected ‘Rubina.’ It concluded that possibly linked high efficiency as R07, leading fitness advantage early increased ingestion. This present BYDV-tolerant genotypes most likely due absence symptoms.

Rhopalosiphum padi (Hemiptera: Aphididae) responses to volatile cues from Barley yellow dwarf virus-infected wheat.

In choice bioassays, Rhopalosiphum padi L. nonviruliferous apterae preferentially locate near volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV)-infected wheat plants compared with VOCs from noninfected plants. However, the specific VOCs responsible for R. padi responses are unknown. It is unclear also if R. padi responses to BYDV-infected wheat are caused by arrest...

Plant viruses alter insect behavior to enhance their spread

Pathogens and parasites can induce changes in host or vector behavior that enhance their transmission. In plant systems, such effects are largely restricted to vectors, because they are mobile and may exhibit preferences dependent upon plant host infection status. Here we report the first evidence that acquisition of a plant virus directly alters host selection behavior by its insect vector. We...

Integrative proteomics to understand the transmission mechanism of Barley yellow dwarf virus-GPV by its insect vector Rhopalosiphum padi

Barley yellow dwarf virus-GPV (BYDV-GPV) is transmitted by Rhopalosiphum padi and Schizaphis graminum in a persistent nonpropagative manner. To improve our understanding of its transmission mechanism by aphid vectors, we used two approaches, isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) and yeast two-hybrid (YTH) system, to identify proteins in R. padi that may interact with or d...

Variation in Transmission Efficiency Among Barley yellow dwarf virus-RMV Isolates and Clones of the Normally Inefficient Aphid Vector, Rhopalosiphum padi.

The RMV strain of Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV-RMV) is an unassigned member of the Luteoviridae that causes barley yellow dwarf in various cereal crops. The virus is most efficiently vectored by the aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis, but can also be vectored with varying efficiency by R. padi and Schizaphis graminum. Field collections of alate aphids migrating into the emerging winter wheat crop in...

Effect of Barley yellow dwarf virus Infection on Yield and Malting Quality of Barley

Barley yellow dwarf (BYD), the most common and widespread virus disease of cereal crops worldwide (14), may be caused by any one of several Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDVs) of the family Luteoviridae. Transmitted by at least 25 aphid species (24), these viruses historically have been classified into two subgroups and five strains based on aphid vector specificity and efficiency (31). However...
